On June 10th, 1991, 11-year-old Jaycee Lee Dugard leaves for school in the town of Meyers, California. Suddenly, she is snatched up and taken in a stranger's car, as her stepfather races to catch her, but is unable to keep up. Police, her parents and others make a immediate search attempts, but in spite of eyewitness accounts of the kidnapping, the case grows cold, and everyone fears the worst. However, Jaycee is actually alive, and for the next 18 years, will be held captive in a secret backyard compound. Her kidnapper, Philip Garrido, a convicted sex offender & his wife, Nancy, would manage to keep Jaycee's existence a secret, despite over 60 parole visits from the police. It wasn’t until Jaycee’s bizarre behaviour during a rare outing with her two daughters, born in capitivity with her, that one officer realized something was really wrong.
The story of Jaycee's remarkable survival and her personal journey are chronicled in full in her two books, A Stolen Life, and Freedom. She and her family also founded The JAYC Foundation, which supports families and children who've been affected by major traumas.
